| Barefootz first saw print in a one-shot tabloid-format comic strip that appeared in a short-lived underground newspaper in Birmingham, but his true debut as the star of an ongoing feature took place in 1971, in the pages of the Crimson-White, the student newspaper at the University of Alabama's Tuscaloosa campus. I myself never attended the UofA, but I had connections!
The character ended up dominating my cartooning life through the 1970s, and the feature's early episodes were eventually collected in the book you see to the right of these words, which has recently gone out of print. (A companion volume that would have compiled the rest of the Barefootz series was originally contemplated, but the idea was ultimately abandoned.)
