Flower Child in a Tie
Early in 1970, when I was barely installed in the Birmingham apartment I was to share for three years with Don Higdon, I doodled a nameless, shoeless guy who was improbably wearing a suit and tie, even though his huge feet were bare.

You don't often come up with a cartoon character who doesn't look like characters that other cartoonists have drawn before, so I didn't discard my doodle. Instead I colored it crudely with Magic Markers and tacked it up on my bulletin board, where I could glance at it easily while awaiting further inspiration.
