Explore the wacky and fabulous world of cartooning. Each student will develop a series of cartoons, exploring image-making methods, captioning, publishing methods, and individualized cartoon styles using pen, ink and marker.
Extended Description: The broad aim of the course will be to acquaint students with the craft of cartooning as it has evolved in America during the last century. Sometimes confused with mere doodling, cartooning is a special branch of the arts that enjoys unique accessibility to average people. Students will experiment with the creation of humorous illustrations and comic strips with an eye to tackling disciplines and creative options that are not always apparent to casual readers who approach them only for their narrative content or humor.

Goals

Familiarizing students with the elements that make cartooning a distinct way of drawing.

Familiarizing students with the most fundamental tools and strategies of cartooning.

Usng exercises to encourage students to express themselves using the tools of cartooning.

Examining in broad outline the historic development of cartooning in America.

Helping students to look at differing approaches to cartooning with analytical eyes.

Helping students get in touch with their inner goofball.

Experimenting with the combined use of words and cartooning to tell stories (as in comics).
