| Extended Description: This course will combine design, drawing, illustration, and creative writing as students explore and experiment with the visual syntax, story, and imagery for contemporary comics, graphic novels, and character development. Attention will also be given to the creation of illustrations for public-domain text fiction not created by the students themselves and the creation by students themselves of characters and stories that will be illustrated by their classmates.
Goals • Familiarizing students with the visual syntax of graphic narrative storytelling. • Intoducing students to the preparatory steps for effective illustrations such as doing background research, finding visual reference, and determining what moments in a story provide the best opportunities for illustration. • Familiarizing students with the fundamentals of characterization. • Examining in broad outline the historic development of the comic medium in America. • Helping students to analyze different approaches to graphic storytelling. • Exploring what makes a story original and effective with or without pictures.
